Alzheimers And Coffee Experiments Show Some Progress

There where a number of Alzheimers and coffee related experiments which tried to suggest that caffeine hampered the production of the protein plaques which are the hallmark of the Alzheimer disease.

One such study made in Scandinavia showed that people in middle-age group who drank three to five cups of coffee a day significantly lowered their risk of developing dementia and Alzheimers disease.

A head researcher at the University of Kuopio in Finland and at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said that the reduction was almost 65 percent later in life.

The study was based on repeated interviews with more than 1400 people in Finland over more than two decades. And the results suggested that coffee can improve some memory functions.

There are other studies that have shown that coffee has some influence on memory functions and can protect the human nerve system.

But this is the first study directed at dementia, Alzheimers and coffee. The most important here is the two decades long period of time in which the subjects where followed.

But it remains unclear exactly how much coffee drinking helped against the onset of dementia. That is still hard to prove.

The fact is that coffee contains strong antioxidants, which are known to counter Alzheimers.

In the future we will need to-do more research on Alzheimers and coffee. Only than we will know for certain if coffee helps to improve human health and human memory.

For now it is better not to exaggerate and drink to much coffee. Why? Because the British study showed the connection between heavy coffee drinking and hallucinations.

I know that when I drink too much coffee, I get irritated quickly and can’t think clearly.

So too much coffee is bad for your health!

One more prominent research on Alzheimers and coffee was done on mice in Florida, USA. The Florida research showed some interesting results.

The mice that had been bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimers disease and were given the equivalent of five 8 oz. cups of coffee a day (app. the same as is found in two cups of specialty coffee such as latte or cappuccino in coffee house), performed much better on tests measuring their memory and thinking skills. Actually they performed as well as mice of the same age without dementia.

The research conducted on mice suggests that caffeine could be a viable »treatment« for established Alzheimer's disease and not simply a protective strategy. That is very important as caffeine is safe drug for most people and appears to directly affect the disease process.

Researchers also stated that they do need to conduct more experiments to find out whether this effect will be seen on people.

They are doing everything in their power to start research on people. If and when that will be done remains unclear.

It is also way too early too say whether drinking coffee or taking caffeine supplements will help people with Alzheimer's.

The mice experiments showed a lot of promise and are a cornerstone for the future test on coffee and Alzheimers. However, to determine if drinking coffee has the same impact on people, we need to do more research.

There was another study done in the University of North Dakota where the test subjects – rabbits consumed just an equivalent of one cup of coffee.

The study went on for 12 weeks. The results showed that rabbits “on caffeine” had the blood brain barrier far more intact than the ones given no caffeine.

It would appear that caffeine blocked several disruptive effects of cholesterol that make the blood-brain barrier leaky.

That means that Caffeine could have an important part in therapies against neurological disorders.

It is too soon to say whether a cup of coffee is anything more than a pleasant pick me up.

For now the most prudent thing if you are a coffee drinker is to take it easyDo not drink large amounts of coffee as it will not improve your health!

And I always find a nice smile to go long way. So smile as much as possible.
