Gourmet Coffee Pods - The Coffee Lovers Guide to the World of Single Serve Coffee Makers

Gourmet coffee pods are becoming more and more popular in the coffee industry and even more between the coffee consumers across the world.

Given the wide selection of flavors the coffee companies are offering and the ease of use that is simple to comprehend as the today’s life-style is generally forcing people to change even the most fundamental rituals like drinking coffee or tea.

It happens to be because of insufficient time and constant bombardment from coffee adverts that people have slowly drifted away from the traditional drip brewers to the domain of single serve coffee makers.

Gourmet coffee pods give a ton of choices that will solely depend on the personality and preferences of whoever will drink the coffee. The pods have been introduced in the market for convenience of everyone.

And with the ever rising coffee shop prices the i . t . shifted its attention to home brewing. We are witnessing the rapid development of single cup coffee brewers and in turn gourmet coffee pods.

O man did the coffee industry changed in last 15 years or so.

What exactly is a coffee pod?

A coffee pod is a pre-packed portion of coffee that can be placed into a coffee machine with an adapted handle. Each portion of pre-packed coffee is exactly the same.

There are hundreds of flavors you can choose from. Coffee retailers are attempting to get the attention of coffee consumers with different flavors. And often it can get a bit confusing especially if you are not gourmet coffee-drinkers.

The producers are going gourmet style. That means more choices, more options, and possibilities for us coffee drinkers. There is a constant urge to change and refine their products into something that will serve the palette of the customers, making them loyal to certain coffees! Thus you can get some really exotic coffee flavors.

There actually are two main types of coffee pods:

  • Tea bag style that is packed in foil (ESE compatible)
  • The plastic pod (looks like a small UHT milk portion)

If you like to try many different coffee blends, than you have to buy a coffee machine that has the single serve ability. And there are many on the market you can choose from. The most known single serve coffee makers come from the Keurig factory, Krups, Tassimo, Senseo…. and we could name at least dozen more.

The list is loooong.

The cons and pros of gourmet coffee pods

Cons

  • The problem with the coffee pods is the waste they produce. Any time you use a pod you generate a significant amount of non-recyclable waste, both in the pod and the wrapping.
  • The price of coffee pods is more expensive than the regular coffee in your drip brewer
  • Coffee pods also cost about 2-3 times as much per serve for a product that\'s not fresh as a bean-to-cup machine
Pros
  • You can use them no matter where you are (at home or in the office without having to limit your options to the standard cup of coffee that does not taste to your liking)
  • Many different flavors
  • Easy to make and serve
  • No cleaning after the brewing
  • The ability to have your cup of coffee at any given time with just a push of a button

Gourmet coffee pods give you the luxury of finding the perfect mix of drink to serve your needs. They give you access to premium roasted and ground coffee in single servings which are secured in a spill-proof container that will give you the right taste when mixed.

There is a catch!

The problem with gourmet coffee pods is that they are not really environmental friendly. They produce a lot of waste. Each time you use a pod you generate a non-recyclable waste.

That is because the pod and the wrapping can’t be recycled. But there are some environmentally friendly alternatives. Drip coffee makers and traditional espresso machines only leave the ground coffee behind. There is no paper and plastic to throw away after brewing coffee in your coffee brewer.

You can even use your used coffee as a fertilizer on your garden. Some plants do grow much better if we give them some ground coffee sediments.

So before you decide and go out and buy some coffee pods, you must remember all the benefits and disadvantages of them. You must remember also that there is no fresher coffee, that the coffee you grind yourself in your home coffee brewer.

The pre-packed portions of coffee - coffee pods will never be able to achieve the freshness that your espresso machine or drip coffee brewer can. But that was never the leading idea behind the invention of gourmet coffee pods.

No, gourmet coffee pods are there to give us a cup of coffee whenever we want to in just a minute and without any cleaning afterwards. That we think is the main advantage of single serve coffee makers that use gourmet coffee pods.
