How To Make Cappuccino – Easy To Follow Guide to Make Cappuccino At Home

How to Make Cappuccino the way they used to do it before the appearance of modern single serve coffee makers?

Well, as a former professional barista I will lead you through the process of brewing great cappuccino that will satisfy even the most demanding gourmet coffee lovers.

And we will do it together the old way.

Cappuccino isn’t hard to make with the right tools, but it does take some practice to make a great one. I will try to make it as simple as possible so you will learn the know-how reasonably fast.

What is Cappuccino?

Cappuccino origins go back to Italy. It is espresso-based drink made by mixing espresso with very fine emulsion of milk and air. Italians drink their cappuccino mostly in the morning as part of their bred, butter, jam coffee routine. I was in Italy many times and i always got the same kind of breakfast with guess what? You guest it right – cappuccino.

In U.S. the company Starbucks introduced authentic cappuccino and in short time it became very popular.

If you like to go to Starbucks, you need to order a "Short Cappuccino« which is made of 1/3 espresso and 2/3 micro foam. To make a good cappuccino you need proper cappuccino maker, good milk, coffee beans that have been ground for espresso and somepractice.

Without good coffee machine you will not get the most out of your coffee beans. And you need to learn the technique for frothing milk.

How to make Cappuccino

  • 1. Put the right amount of espresso coffee of your choice to espresso machine portafilter. Gently tamp down to make the surface of the ground beans smooth.
  • 2. Place it into the espresso machine.
  • 3. Take a preheated ceramic coffee cup, and place it under the machine.
  • 4. Start making micro foam in a frothing pitcher.

The idea is that the steam wand on your espresso machine will start to make a frothy layer.

    How?

You achieve that by tipping the pitcher that is holding the heated milk and bringing the steaming apparatus along the surface gently bringing the steam wand up and down (not so much) as the foam is created.

For a shot of cappuccino you need roughly the same volume of milk. If you do it correctly you should have frothed layer of milk and air bubbles that is twice the size of espresso coffee.

  • 5. Once the milk is steamed to a temperature of not less than 140°F push the espresso machine start button to make a nice cup of espresso coffee.
  • 6. After the espresso is ready, take the cup of coffee out of your coffee machine, use the spoon and add enough milk foam to fill the entire cup. If you are a barista you have to give as much frothed milk on top of espresso as possible.

How to make cappuccino : Troubleshooting

If you can’t do the nice milk foam do not worry. It takes a bit of practice to master it. Remember that once the milk is preheated and you did not made good frothy milk foam, you will not be able to do it.

First tip

You should take another volume of cool milk and start new attempt. You could add one ice cube in the milk pitcher to make milk cooler but it can make a slight taste difference.

Or

Second TIP

Use some mineral water with milk and it will make your job much easier. I can tell you that from my experience. If you follow the upper steps you should make a nice cup of cappuccino in no time.
